Yoga Glossary
Learn the meaning of common Sanskrit words
used by yogis and yoginis in and out of class!
Ahimsa - Non-injury, harmlessness, non-violence (one of the yamas)
Asana - Pronounced AH-sah-nah, these are the yoga postures and are the third stage of yoga.
Aum - Often written as OM, it is regularly interpreted as having three sounds representing creation, preservation and destruction. Also linked to the Latin word ‘Omni’ meaning ‘all’ as in ‘omniscient’.
Bhakti - Love, devotion, adoration.
Bikram Yoga - The sequence of 26 postures practiced in a hot room developed by Bikram Choudhury. Commonly called Hot Yoga.
Brahmacharya - Purity, nonlust, and interpreted by some to mean chastity (one of the yamas).
Chakra - The 7 centers of radiating life force energy (prana) located from the base of the spine to the crown of the head.
Guru - A spiritual mentor or advisor who illuminates the darkness that may cover spirituality.
Karma - The concept of action which causes the concept of cause and effect. All that we think, speak and do creates our karmic path.
Kundalini - Literally a coiled female serpant who is the divine cosmic energy. Symbolically, the Kundalini lays sleeping in the Muladhara chakra. When this energy is aroused and pierces the thousand petaled lotus in the head the Yogi is in union with the Supreme Universal Soul.
Mala - A garland, wreath, or string of prayer beads.
Mantra - A sacred thought or prayer believed to be capable of creating transformation. A popular mantra to Ganesha (remover of obstacles) is: Aum Gan Ganapataye Namo Namah.
Namaste - A greeting of respect and thanks translated many ways. During this greeting hands are pressed together at heart center or at the third eye and head and shoulders lightly bow. Common translations are “I bow to the divine in you” and “The light within me honors the light within you”.
Patanjali - Referred to as the “Father of Yoga”, he is the compiler of the Yoga Sutras. It is unclear when this great sage lived but it is thought to be between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D. He explains how yoga isn’t simply doing postures and then going home to ‘real life’ - yoga is much more than that and requires spiritual awareness and a mind-body balance.
Pranayama - Method of controlling the prana through breath.
Ujjayi - A type of pranayama in which the inhale and exhale make a ‘ha’ sound.
Virabhadra - A powerful hero or warrior created out of Shiva’s hair.
